Magnification
Magnification is the degree to which a scope makes targets appear larger. The notation for this is fairly straightforward: a 3X scope makes what you are looking at three times larger, a 9X variety will make it nine times larger, et cetera.
Fixed vs. Variable Magnification Scopes
Some rifle scopes are fixed, meaning they only have one possible magnification setting. Others are variable magnification and you can set a different level depending on your needs. You will see this written as a range, e.g. 3-6X for a scope that can be 3X, 4X, 5X, or 6X.
Objective Lens Diameter
The objective lens is the portion at the end of the scope. Its diameter is listed in millimeters (mm). The bigger the diameter, the clearer and brighter the image will be. However, a bigger objective lens also makes the scope heavier and can reflect sunlight and give away your position if you are hunting.
Scope Reticles
The reticle is the crosshairs you see when looking through a scope. There are three common types and each one has different benefits. We recommend trying them out and choosing the one that works best for you. The most important thing is that shooting and aiming should feel natural.
Duplex
This is the default variety for reticles and is the best choice if you are new to scopes. It works well for hunting and target shooting.
Mil-Dot
This type of crosshairs estimates a target’s distance. It is mainly used by the military, law enforcement, and security. However, it may be helpful for hunting purposes if you are shooting from a long distance.
BDC
A ballistic drop compensating (BDC) reticle uses lines or dots to mark the expected drop of a bullet at different ranges. This is an especially good choice for long-distance shooters, although once you learn how to use it, it can be beneficial for all purposes.
What other factors do i need to consider when choosing a Tactical Rifle Scope?
Eye relief refers to the comfortable distance that you can hold your riflescope from your eye and still be able to see the entire image. The eye relief of a riflescope differs depending on it’s magnification. On a riflescope, the larger the eye relief the better, as not only does it allow you to spot your target more quickly, but it also reduces the chance of the riflescope injuring the eye if the rifle recoils.
Most rifle scopes on the market are waterproof to protect them from any unexpected downpours. It’s always good to check that your preferred option has this feature.
Most rifle scopes have special coatings on their lenses to reduce the amount of light that is lost as it is transmitted through the riflescope to your eye. These coatings reduce the scattering and reflection of light, as it passes through the riflescope, resulting in more light reaching your eye and increasing the sharpness and contrast of the image that you see. Lenses can either be coated, multicoated or fully multicoated, with the later being the most effective at reducing light loss. Despite an increase in cost, we always recommend choosing multicoated lenses.
When buying a scope it's important to consider how that scope adjusts for parallax. You'll need to choose between a scope that has been factory set to correct for parallax at certain distances, one that has an adjustable objective lens, or a side focus. What Are The External Components Of A Tactical Rifle Scope?
Tube
The tube is a cylindrical body made of metal or high-strength polymer. It houses all the internal components of a rifle scope and provides structural support and protection for the delicate optics within.

Mounting Base
The mounting base is a flat or curved surface made of metal or durable polymer. It is attached to the firearm's receiver or rail system and its function is to provide a stable platform for mounting accessories.

Scope Rings Or Mounts
The scope rings or mounts help securely attach the riflescope to your firearm’s receiver or rail and align your scope with the firearm’s bore.

Adjustment Knobs
The adjustment knobs are manual controls that allow you to make precise adjustments to various settings, such as magnification, parallax or reticle focus. They may include dials, levers or other mechanisms.

Illumination Controls
The illumination controls are knobs, buttons or switches that allow you to adjust the brightness or color of the illuminated reticle depending on your preferences or environmental conditions.

Understanding Tactical Rifle Scope Components
Objective Lens
Your objective lens is the big lens up front. The main purpose of the objective lens is to collect light. Larger objective lenses collect more light, creating a brighter and larger image, but it comes at the cost of optic weight and size, as larger objective lenses require a longer focal length to maintain image quality and depth of field. That’s why optical engineers must carefully balance a scope’s magnification range, objective lens diameter, and overall scope size to deliver the best performance for the scope’s intended niche.
Scope Body
As light passes into the objective lens, it is focused into the scope body tube. Scope bodies come in several diameters (1-inch, 30 mm, 34 mm, etc.), and it’s important to know the diameter of the scope body when mounting the optic, as mounts need to be sized to match. The main benefit of a wider scope body is a larger elevation adjustment range, which we will describe later. The trade-off is that larger bodies make for heavier optics, and you may not need that extra elevation adjustment if the scope is used at short distances.
Elevation And Windage Turrets
Located on the top and right sides of your rifle scope, the Elevation Turret and Windage Turret control the up/down and right/left movement of your Erector Tube Assembly.
Illumination Knob
If your scope features an illuminated reticle, it will probably have an illumination knob. By turning this knob, you can increase or decrease the brightness of your reticle illumination, ensuring optimal visibility without washing out the target. In most cases, this knob will also house the battery for your reticle illumination.
Parallax Adjustment
If your scope has adjustable parallax, it will have a control knob somewhere on the scope body. Sometimes, parallax adjustment appears alongside the illumination controls in order to save space.
Magnification Ring
Located at the front of the eyepiece, the magnification ring controls the apparent zoom setting of the scope. Like your parallax adjustment, the magnification ring should have visible numbers, allowing you to find the best power for any distance.
Ocular Lens
The rearmost component of your scope’s anatomy is the eyepiece and ocular lens, which emit the visible image. This part of the scope also features your diopter adjustment, a small ring that allows you to adjust the reticle’s focus. The diopter should be set to accommodate your own specific eyesight. Most scope manuals will include details on how to do this.
When properly used, a rifle scope can be precise at a great distance, but it can also be compromised by something called parallax.
Parallax appears when the reticle, or crosshairs, seems to move in relation to the target when the marksman moves their head. At extreme distances, this can cause the marksman to miss their target entirely.
Fortunately, most precision rifle scopes have a parallax adjustment feature that allows you to correct this issue. The adjustment mechanism typically consists of a knob or dial located on the side of the scope, allowing you to adjust the focal position of the reticle in relation to the target by repositioning the focal lens assembly.
In most cases, your parallax adjustment will have clear numbering on the side, ranging from a minimum adjustment to ‘infinity,’ often listed in 100-yard intervals. If you know your distance to the target, this makes it easy to set the parallax adjustment. If you do not know your distance to the target, use a laser range finder or your reticle to find the distance to the target.
If you do not see a parallax adjustment knob, the scope probably has a fixed, non-adjustable parallax. In this case, refer to the scope manufacturer’s specifications to determine the calibrated distance.
Ultimately, parallax adjustment is an essential feature for precision-oriented rifle scopes. However, it may not be necessary for low-power rifle scopes, which are best at distances where parallax error isn’t a major factor.
Step-By-Step Tactical Rifle Scope Mounting Overview
Mounting a rifle scope correctly is vital for accurate shooting. Here’s a general overview of the process:
Choose the Right Mount: Select a mount that fits your rifle and scope.
Position the Scope: Place the scope in the rings or mount, ensuring it’s level and at the correct eye relief distance.
Secure the Scope: Tighten the mounting screws according to the manufacturer’s specifications to avoid over-tightening.
Align the Reticle: Make sure your rifle’s reticle is perfectly vertical and horizontal.
Boresighting: This initial step helps align the barrel and the scope, reducing the adjustment needed during zeroing.
Zeroing the Scope: Fire at a target at a specific distance, usually 100 yards, and adjust the windage and elevation turrets until the point of aim matches the point of impact.
Each mount type has its own set of benefits and is suitable for different shooting applications and rifle types.
General Rifle Scope Mounting Tools
Mounting a rifle scope correctly is crucial for achieving the best performance.
Torque Wrench: For precise tightening of screws to the manufacturer’s recommended specifications.
Leveling Kit: To ensure the scope is perfectly horizontal and aligned with the rifle. This is often accomplished using small levels,
Gun Stabilizer or Vice: To securely hold the rifle in place during the mounting process.
Select Mounting Hardware
Basic hardware required for mounting a scope includes:
Scope Rings or Mount: Depending on your rifle’s base (Picatinny, Weaver, etc.).
Rail System: A rail system like Picatinny or dovetail is required if your rifle doesn’t have a built-in base.

Leveling A Rifle Scope
Step 1: Place the rifle in a stable rest and attach the lower half of the rings.
Step 2: Set the scope in the rings and loosely attach the top halves.
Step 3: Use a leveling kit to ensure the scope is perfectly horizontal.
Step 4: Adjust the scope’s position for proper eye relief.
Step 5: Tighten the ring screws in a crisscross pattern to the specified torque.
Adjusting the Reticle Focus
This step is essential for a clear-sighted picture. The procedure can vary based on the scope model, but typically involves adjusting the diopter or focus knob until the reticle is sharp and clear and ensuring the reticle remains in focus as you shift your eye position.
