Limitations of Red Dot Sights
Range
As I mentioned above, red dot sights are more than accurate enough for hunting or defensive shooting out to moderate ranges if the user is willing to put in some time and ammunition into practice. With that said, red dots are not a one-stop solution for long-range shooting, and if you plan to use a particular firearm at ranges greater than about 200 yards, then some other type of optic will likely suit your needs better.
In cases where you need or want a rifle to do it all, some folks have taken to mounting pistol-sized red dot sights on rifles as well as a primary, more highly magnified optic.
Battery
Since red dot sights run on battery power, there is always the chance that your batteries will run out at an inopportune moment.
Contemporary red dots often have batteries that can last for months on end, and companies like Holosun make models that use solar power as well. Even with the advances in batteries, it’s recommended that you have some kind of iron sight option on your gun so that if your batteries do go out or your optic breaks when you need it the most, you’ll at least have some sort of sighting system to use.
Vision Issues
While red dot optics are an excellent choice for many people, they don’t work well for everyone: especially if you have a condition like astigmatism that makes some lights appear fuzzy or warped.
But all is not lost. Some sights come with a green dot instead of red, which is easier for many people to see. You can also try getting a red dot sight with adjustable brightness to reduce any blurring that may occur. Polarized glasses can also help.

The aiming process can be described as follows:
The lens (lens system) of this type of sight projects the aiming mark to infinity.
Radiation from the light source (target) becomes visible of the arrow (observer) due to a parallel flow.
When the focus of the shooter's eye shifts in transverse directions, the reticle is moved along a switch lens, concentrating on the target regardless of the position of the shooter's eye relative to the reticle itself.
The arrowhead pupil does not have to be on the reticle axis, and, thanks to the above-mentioned properties of the colli-mator sight, it suffices to be within the projection of the lens.

Illuminated reticle
The illuminated reticle that forms a red dot is created by an LED or laser. This is typically adjustable for brightness, so you can suit your preferences and match ambient lighting conditions. Brighter reticles are easier for your eye to pick up, but they also appear larger over your target and cause more strain on your eye.
Battery life
The LEDs and lasers in red dot sights are very efficient, so you can expect tens of thousands of hours out of your batteries. Turning your optic off when not in use or allowing it to enter sleep mode is one way to save energy, but many users leave their optic on at all times so it’s always ready. A few models include a small solar panel that can extend battery life up to 50,000 hours and even function without a battery with adequate light.
Adjustability
Like any good sight, red dots can be adjusted for windage and elevation. Establishing a proper zero for your weapon system is critical, so take it seriously and learn how to do it right. Most shooters use Kentucky windage, meaning they move their point of aim depending on distance and environmental conditions rather than repositioning the reticle itself.
Compact size
Because of their simplicity, red dot sights are quite compact. Tube-style red dot sights are similar in size to what you’d get from an RCO or ACOG. Open red dot sights and are even smaller, and have become very popular among pistol shooters.

Simplicity
Iron sights rely on your ability to line up all components for maximum precision. Red dot sights cut out the middleman and just give you the aiming point up front. This allows you to center all of your focus on your shot instead of lining everything up. A red dot makes acquiring and tracking your target much easier than just using iron sights.
Improved Accuracy
Another thing about iron sights is that you need to be aware of your focal plane when using them. With red dot optics, you don’t. This eliminates human error from manual sighting that can impact accuracy, and red dot reticles are notably precise once they’ve been properly zeroed (sighted in).
Faster Target Acquisition
A high-quality red dot has a crisp, bright reticle that can be easily seen in nearly any lighting condition. Your eyes are instantly drawn to the aiming point, and the reticle is incredibly accurate, which provides more confidence to take the shot quicker.

Red dots are specifically designed for shooting with both eyes open, unlike iron sights and most riflescopes. Shooting with both eyes open allows you to maintain maximum situational awareness with a full field of view. Mounting a red dot sight on your pistol is a great idea for self-defense scenarios because you can precisely aim at any threats without losing sight of what’s around you.
Better Vision in Dark Environments
A bright red dot reticle is much easier to see than iron sights in low-light conditions. This is another reason red dot optics are ideal for home-defense firearms.
Before buying a reflex Red Dot Sight, every shooter should know what performance he or she expects for the given price. There are countless suppliers with an unmanageable number of models and features, so you should always think about what the sight should be able to do before buying. In general, it is always advisable to look at prices, equipment and (if possible) place of manufacture. Visier magazine writes the following:
“Models manufactured in Germany or in the USA already have a higher production cost. Japanese manufacturers, on the other hand, are professionals when it comes to the quality of optical lenses and electronics, and deliver both at comparatively lower costs.”
When making a purchase decision, the point size, point sharpness and point color should be important factors: point reticle only or switchable to circle/circle dot ? Do you prefer green reticle color or gold due to the weakness in red-green vision? You should ask yourself these questions beforehand. Most manufacturers indicate the size of their luminous dots in MOA (minute of angle, about 2,8 cm at 100 meters or 1 inch at 100 yards). For long guns and shooting distances of up to 150 meters, point sizes of <3 MOA are recommended, for short weapons <4MOA.
It is also advisable to know the conditions in which you will operate, whether in extreme conditions, or with gloves; at the indoor range or in the wild. Do I need long battery life? Or transparent protective caps through which I can aim immediately even without opening them? As already described above, closed models or container constructions are suitable for extreme conditions. Models with solar cells and/or shake-awake function (automatic switch-on/switch-off) can save batteries and simple control buttons make use with gloves much easier.
Another important question: is there a suitable assembly for my weapon? Before buying an optoelectronic sight, it should be clarified whether the manufacturer can supply a mount that corresponds to the weapon and its requirements, or whether a special format is required from the gunsmith.
Determining the eye relief is only limited, if at all, by the mounting options on the weapon. When buying, always make sure that your new reflex sight restricts the field of view as little as possible, without neglecting lens protection. Depending on the application, open reflex sights with 24x32 mm lenses or tube reflex sights with a diameter of 20-30 mm are useful.
Size and Weight
Before investing in a red dot sight, consider the size and weight that would be best suited to your firearm and use-type. Larger sights typically offer bigger objective lens diameter, providing a wider field of view, whereas smaller ones are lightweight and less bulky.
Battery Life
Opt for a red dot sight with a long battery life for sustained performance. Some models feature power-saving technologies like auto-shutdown and brightness adjustment to prolong battery life.
Reticle Size and Brightness
Choose a sight that allows for adjustment of reticle size and brightness. A larger dot is ideal for close-range, rapid-fire, while a smaller dot offers precision at longer distances.
Durability
Look for sights that have a robust construction, can resist recoil, and have a water, shock, and fog-resistant design. These will ensure the longevity and reliability of the sight.
Mounting Options
Compatibility with your firearm’s mounting system is crucial. Most red dot sights are versatile and compatible with common mounting rails like Picatinny and Weaver.
Co-Witnessing Capability
If you plan to use your iron sights as a backup, consider if the sight allows for co-witnessing and what type – absolute or lower 1/3rd.
How To Zero A Red Dot Sight in Simple Steps
Place your zeroing target at your desired zeroing distance.
Choose your point of aim and shoot a grouping at the point of aim.
Measure (in inches) the distance between your point of aim and your point impact and use the formula above to convert the inches to MOA.
This must be done for both elevation (up and down) and windage (left and right).
Using your calculations from Step 3, adjust your red dot sight to line up the point of impact with the point of aim.
Shoot another grouping to confirm that your zero is accurate.
