Anatomy and Function of Mini Red Dot Sight
Red dot sights work because of “Pepper's Ghost,” an optical illusion known to stage magicians since the mid-19th century. When two or more mirrors are positioned just so, and when light is bounced off them at the right angle, objects reflected in the mirrors can appear to be somewhere other than where they actually are. This is why red dot reticles appear to float in midair — the image is reflected onto a transparent screen from somewhere farther back in the housing.
Mounting Systems
A red dot sight can be mounted on a weapon in several ways. Models intended for use with rifles or shotguns tend to have traditional clamp or rail mounts, of which there are many different styles. Mounting systems for semi-automatic handguns are a little more complicated. Again, there are many different types of mounting hardware, but because the slide moves, sight mounts must attach to the rail or frame of the handgun. The main takeaway here is that red dot sights for handguns are almost never universal; they're model-specific, and you need to buy one designed to fit your particular handgun.
Open and Closed Designs
Red dot sights are either open or closed. Open designs are those in which a significant part of the unit is exposed, whereas closed models are completely covered by some kind of housing. Closed designs tend to be heavier and bulkier, but they're more durable and less vulnerable to dirt and debris. They're also less affected by changing light conditions, which can have dramatic effects on the visibility of the reticle.
Lenses and Magnification
Some red dot sights use a single lens, whereas others have two. In either case, the vast majority are one-power sights, meaning they offer no magnification. This is typically a deliberate design choice; the main purpose of a red dot sight is to maximize your speed and accuracy, but when magnification enters the equation, you start having to do math — not a particularly fast activity, even for the brightest of us.
In a modern reflex red dot sight, a battery is used to power a single LED. This LED projects either a red or green light onto a concave lens. Thanks to a special coating, that illuminated point becomes visible to your eye. Because the dot only appears on one plane, there is no sight alignment required. It’s really that simple.
Holographic sights take this technology a step further by directing a laser along a series of mirrors inside the optic. As a result, the reticle remains unchanged by external magnifiers and doesn’t suffer from parallax distortion. In fact, holographic red dot sights will continue to function accurately even if the lens is partially broken or obscured. As long as some glass is present and visible, the reticle will appear and continue to work properly.
One disadvantage of red dot sights is the parallax effect we mentioned earlier. This kind of distortion happens when the reticle moves in relation to the shooter’s head. Parallax distortion is most common at very close ranges (usually less than 25 yards), so practical accuracy doesn’t suffer too much. The amount of parallax distortion differs between makes and models, as well.
Another limitation of traditional reflex-type red dot sights is the fact that the reticle increases in size when paired with a magnifier. That means that a three-MOA dot, which appears to be three inches in diameter when placed on a target at 100 yards, will appear to be nine inches in diameter on the same target when paired with a three-power magnifier. This makes it harder to see and accurately engage your target.
Pros of Mini Red Dot Sight
Improved Speed and Accuracy
Even though most of us learned to shoot with iron sights long before we started experimenting with fancier optics, iron sights aren't the greatest way to aim. It takes a fair amount of practice to correctly align the front sight, rear sight and target, and it's even harder to do so with lightning speed.
Greater Eye Relief
Eye relief is a complicated visual phenomenon, but to keep it simple, it's the precise distance and angle at which you must look through a scope to get a clear, well-aligned sight picture. Standard scopes can be tricky; if your eye isn't positioned just right, you'll have a hard time hitting anything.
Better Stance and Grip
Iron sights can sometimes encourage poor shooting ergonomics, especially if the target is above or below you. But with a red dot sight, you can't even see the reticle unless your posture and grip are more or less correct. With repeated practice over time, you'll get much better at quickly assuming a perfect firing stance.
Improved Situational Awareness
When you have a choice, it's best to shoot with both eyes open, but iron sights and some kinds of optics can make it hard to do so. Closing one eye makes it easier to line up a shot at the cost of sacrificing half your vision. Red dot sights are designed to be easy to use with both eyes open, meaning you can maintain much greater tactical awareness and avoid tunnel vision.
Zero It and Forget It
As long as you buy a decent-quality red dot sight that mounts tightly on your gun, you should never have to re-zero it unless it gets knocked out of alignment. Be sure to read up on how to zero a rifle to make sure you're up to speed.
As I mentioned in the introduction, there are several types of red dot sights, each using a different principle to make the sight function. There are three main types of pistol red dots:
Reflex
Reflex sights work by emitting a beam via an LED, which is then bounced off of a translucent mirror inside of the optic. That laser is bounced back from the angled mirror into your eye. So, when you look through the scope, you see through the translucent mirror as well as seeing the bounced laser, and the effect is the perception of a dot or other reticle over the target.
Since all of the technologies involved in a reflex sight are fairly simple, these are often the most affordable kinds of red dot sights, ranging from as little as $20 to over $500.
Prismatic
Prismatic sights, as you can probably guess by the name, make use of a prism. In particular, prismatic sights have their reticles etched into a lens, and then the image of the target is focused using a series of prisms that the user can adjust for sharpness, and, often, magnification.
Prismatic sights well predate red dots, though red dot prismatic sights take the above concept and use a battery to illuminate the reticle. The major benefit here is that since the reticle is etched on the lens, it is super sharp and, usually, can function reasonably well even without a battery installed, albeit not as a true red dot. These sights generally cost anywhere from $120 to $500.

Holographic sights use a laser, a series of reflectors, and a grate with an image on it to project an image on an output display. In gun sights, this grate usually has a two-dimensional reticle, though a hologram can, technically, be three-dimensional as well.
In making the output screen a transparent piece of glass, the result is a reflection of an optic being placed in the middle of a conveniently clear window for the shooter. These sights have no parallax, or shift in perceived point of impact, making them highly accurate, but the complexity of their reflectors and grating make these the most expensive out of the three types listed here – typically costing between $400-1,500.
