In the 1840s, some American firearms mechanics began to manufacture firearms with optical sighting devices. In 1848, Morgan James of New York State designed a tube-shaped sighting device with the same length as the barrel. The rear half of the device was equipped with a glass lens and 2 crosshairs for sighting.

Later, similar targeting devices were used in the American Civil War. But the real scope of practical value was born in 1904, developed by Carl Zeiss of Germany, and used in the First World War. In World War II, the scope began to mature.
